Pathways - Saturday 7th June 2025.
I'm always energised by opportunities to delve into the 'why' and 'how' of creative work, and I'm thrilled to announce I'll be doing just that as part of the upcoming Pathways series at ArtSpace, 5 Greens Road, Cambridge. On Saturday, June 7th. In this post, I wanted to give you a little preview of what I'll be discussing and offer a closer look at the work I'm excited to explore during the event. I'll be joining talented artist Alexandra Baraitser for an in-depth discussion about our artistic approaches, thinking, and creative choices as well as displaying some of our work on the walls to serve as the basis for discussion.
This initiative is a fantastic platform for both artists and anyone interested in the communicative power of creativity. I'm particularly looking forward to sharing insights into my ongoing 'Fraser Project' with a focus on the current explorations of the 'Transect' concept – a method I'm continuing through the years to document environment, from coastlines to urban cores, from a set perspective of how the human hand has shaped our surroundings.
You can book tickets here on Eventbrite.
Pathways
"The Pathways series has developed as a place to consider artists' approaches in depth, and discuss their thinking and their choices in a facilitated group. Seeing the display of their work, and joining the discussions can refresh your own ideas and understanding, whether you are also an artist, or simply interested in the communicative power of creativity.
Alexandra Baraitser meticulously documents through drawing and painting a wide range of designed objects including chairs, lighting, textiles, interior design, stations and bridges. Her paintings are a celebration of contemporary design and architecture and are based on images she selects from vintage magazines.
Richard Fraser is an architectural and topographic photographer. He is currently exploring the concept of the ’Transect’ as part of his ongoing ‘Fraser Project’, capturing our environment from a distinct perspective from coastlines through to the inner core of our urban areas."
It's a real honour to have this body of work recognised and showcased by a platform I greatly admire for its thoughtful curation of photography exploring landscape, place, and perception.
'Tapestry' has been presented both as an online feature and as Issue 42 of Subjectively Objective's Monthly Monograph Magazine. The monograph includes 28 photographs from the series.
About the 'Tapestry' Series
This series, 'Tapestry,' stems from a long-held interest in visually exploring the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world. Rather than focusing on traditionally 'beautiful' landscapes, I turned my attention to those spaces often overlooked – places earmarked for human use, currently in use, or perhaps used in the past for residential, commercial, or industrial gain.
Think of roads, car parks, storage yards, quarries, and coastal defences. These are often transient, functional spaces we pass by daily without giving them much thought. My aim with 'Tapestry' was to approach these scenes with the same care as I would an architectural commission or classic landscape view, presenting an honest view of the human fingerprint on our environment. I wanted to highlight the existence of these places, with all the awkwardness and intrigue that can come with them.
Working across all seasons, times of day and weather conditions, the resulting images are often stark, but they remain true to the scene as I found it.
The feature and monograph include my full artist statement, where I elaborate on this approach. Essentially, through these images, I hope to provide a sense of understanding – a visual explanation, perhaps – of how our society interacts with the natural world. With this work, I invite viewers to consider how these functional spaces shape our own relationship with nature and to question the ways we engage with our environment, allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions without an imposed judgment. My goal was simply to capture what exists in an aesthetic way, true to the scene.
Where to See 'Tapestry' & Purchase the Monograph
I'd be delighted if you took a look at the work!
View the Online Feature: You can explore the full online feature on Subjectively Objective's Substack here.
Purchase the Monograph: For those who appreciate print, Issue 42 of the Subjectively Objective Monthly Monograph, dedicated entirely to 'Tapestry' (with 28 photos and the artist statement), is available to purchase directly from their shop. You can secure your limited edition copy via this link.
Thank you, as always, for your interest in my work. I hope you enjoy exploring 'Tapestry' and perhaps even adding the monograph to your collection.
]]>Parndon Mill itself is a haven for creatives, a place where the hum of inspiration fills the air. And within this vibrant community, Alan's forge stands as a testament to the enduring power of traditional skills.
Stepping into his workshop is like entering a different world. The air is thick with the scent of coal and hot metal. Tools, both familiar and unique, line the walls, each telling a story of countless projects and hard-won expertise.
As you'll see in the photo that the bridge, a testament to Alan's skill and vision, is more than just a crossing; it's a work of art in its own right. The delicate, intricate metalwork reflects the surrounding natural beauty, creating a harmonious blend of human artistry and the environment. It's a place where you can pause, not just to cross, but to admire the craftsmanship and setting.
Alan's work is a reminder that in our increasingly digital world, there's still a place for the hands-on, the tangible, the beautifully crafted. He's a guardian of traditional skills, a creator of lasting beauty, and a vital part of the Parndon Mill community.
If you find yourself in Harlow, take a moment to visit. Wander the grounds, soak in the creative atmosphere, and perhaps, if you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of Alan at work, transforming metal into magic. And as you cross his bridge, take a moment to appreciate the artistry and dedication that went into its creation.
Alan's work is a reminder that true craftsmanship is timeless and holds value in so many more ways than capital alone - something that is irresistible to me as a photographer.
I'm absolutely delighted to announce that a project I recently had the privilege of photographing, the Mirror Pod Extension designed by Mart Barrass Architect, has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 RIBA East Award! This project is a stunning example of how contrasting architectural styles can not only coexist but beautifully complement each other, creating a captivating dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The original house, with its classic thatched roof and warm, inviting façade, embodies the timeless charm of rural English architecture. It speaks of history, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to its surroundings. It's the kind of image that evokes a sense of home and belonging.
And then there's the extension – a bold, contemporary intervention that provides a striking counterpoint to the original dwelling. Clad in reflective panels, the aptly named "Mirror Pod" appears to float, seamlessly merging with the landscape and mirroring the surrounding trees and sky. The sleek, minimalist design of the extension offers a glimpse into the future, while its reflective surface creates a fascinating visual interplay with the traditional form of the existing house.
What truly sets this project apart is the thoughtful way in which the extension integrates with the original structure. It's not simply a modern addition tacked onto an old house. Instead, Mart Barrass Architect has masterfully created a sense of harmony and balance. The Mirror Pod's reflective surface amplifies the beauty of the thatched cottage and its setting, while the traditional form of the house provides a grounding element to the futuristic design.
While my focus as a photographer for this particular announcement was primarily on capturing the exterior form and the interplay of old and new, I know that the interior spaces are equally compelling. They are designed to maximize natural light and create a seamless connection between inside and out. The extension offers a flexible, modern living space that complements the more traditional rooms of the original house.
But it's more than just a beautiful space – it's a home. Speaking with the family who live here, it's clear that they truly love the space that has been created. The extension has become an integral part of their lives, a place where they can relax, connect, and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.
This project is a testament to the power of innovative design, showcasing how seemingly disparate architectural styles can not only coexist but enhance one another. It's a celebration of both tradition and modernity, a reflection of the past and a bold step into the future. I'm incredibly proud to have played a part in capturing the essence of this remarkable project through my photography.
Huge congratulations to Mart Barrass Architect and the entire team involved in bringing this vision to life! This well-deserved shortlisting from the RIBA is a testament to their creativity, vision, and dedication. I eagerly await the announcement of the winners and wish them the very best of luck!

Saltdean Lido, a true icon of Art Deco design on the East Sussex coast, has been brought back to life! It was an honour to be invited to photograph this incredible structure after its extensive restoration. What was once derelict is now a vibrant community hub, and my lens was lucky enough to capture its renewed splendour.
The restoration team, led by architects RH Partnership, Cemplas Waterproofing & Concrete Repairs Ltd, and Mapei (UK) Ltd, worked wonders. They tackled everything from concrete corrosion to structural damage, all through respecting the Lido's unique 1930s aesthetic. The result? A stunning blend of historical authenticity and modern resilience pulled from a derelict structure highly likely to be destined for non-community use.
Bringing new life to Saltdean Lido has been a fantastic achievement for the construction team and the whole community," said Derek Leaver, chair of Saltdean Lido SLCIC. And he's absolutely right! The Lido is once again a place for everyone to enjoy, swim, sauna, work out and meet for events and is a testament to the dedication of all involved.
If you're looking for a photographer to document your work-in-progress or completed project, please contact me at [email protected]. I'd love to help you create stunning visuals that tell the world about your passion and dedication.

I've just finished a round of making portraits of these gorgeous people at RH Partnership architects. Brief: landscape format, colour, similar in style, looking at camera, mixture of seated and standing, backgrounds of the studio, multi day shoot (some were not in the office on day 1 so colours and lighting needed to be balanced across the range). These were taken as part of a typical business as usual day, so timelines and lighting needed to be well-organised at fuss kept to a minimum. Staff get to choose their preferred image on the day - we select the filename and I edit from a list of these.
Get in touch if you'd like some for your workplace!
A little positive feedback on a quick turnaround:
'Thank you so much, they look great!'

'We are thrilled to announce that our development of 21 new almshouses for the Great Shelford Village Charity has been shortlisted for Best Housing Project (up to £10 million) in the latest AJ Architecture Awards.
The 21 new homes, a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom houses, are grouped in three curved terraces surrounding a central green. Equipped with air source heat pumps, mechanically ventilated heat recovery systems, triple glazing and high levels of insulation, the homes are designed to minimise energy consumption and keep residents’ running costs low.
Alongside the new development the charity has planted some 250 native trees and laid out allotments, a community garden, footpaths and benches, providing enhanced public access to the 8 acres of land it owns on the northern edge of the village, designed by Landscape Architect Emily Haysom'.

I've taken photos for Haysom Ward Miller for many years now, and they've been incredibly successful with their awards and subsequent work which arises from such recognition. My part of that in the image making process has helped them to get in front of judges, feature in many publications and articles online and in print, as well as use as examples of previous work to prospective clients. If you have projects you'd like documented with care and attention as well as somebody to work with over the course of many projects who will endeavour to get to know your designs and what you're about, then please get in touch to discuss your ideas today by using the contact me page of my website. ]]>The Great Shelford almshouse development, recently honored with the Regional award for Best Small Social Housing Development at the LABC Building Excellence Awards East Anglia 2024, stands as an example of design excellence, sustainability, and community-centric planning. This prestigious recognition further underscores the project's commitment to providing affordable, energy-efficient, and socially connected homes and I was delighted to play my part in it, working with lead architect Rowan Haysom, to understand the project and take the ground based and aerial photography.
One of the most striking features of this award-winning development is its commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for residents. By positioning vehicles in bays on the periphery, the design prioritises pedestrian movement and fosters a sense of community within the central green. Children play freely, neighbors interact wihtout traffic noise and pollution, and the entire space holds a sense of tranquility.
The architectural language of the project is elegant and functional. The open triangular layout creates a dynamic flow, offering various loops and entrance points that encourage exploration and engagement. The gently sloping roofs not only create interesting interior spaces but also visually integrate the buildings into the surrounding countryside, further enhanced by the green roofs.
Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the design. Equipped with air source heat pumps, heat recovery systems, triple glazing, and high levels of insulation, these homes are designed to minimize energy consumption and reduce running costs for residents.
This award-winning project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the entire team: Haysom Ward Miller Architects, E.N Suiter & Sons, ANDREW FIREBRACE PARTNERSHIP LIMITED, Emily Haysom Landscape Architect, and TSA Riley. Their combined expertise and dedication have resulted in a development that sets a new standard for affordable housing.
Having had the privilege of photographing this project, I was taken by its thoughtful design and the positive impact it has on the community there. The interplay of light and shadow on the curved terraces, the well-used shared spaces, and the integration with the landscape and the allotments, meadow space and countryside beyond all help tell this compelling story.
Architects, landscape designers, engineers, and more – Let's talk about your project! I'd be pleased to talk through it with no obligation to commit to work, but if you have something with an interesting story to tell like this one, I may have the skills to help you share it with the attention it deserves.
Whether your project is a residential development, a commercial building, a public space, or a landscape transformation, we can explore how to work together to capture its unique character and tell its story through powerful imagery.

The pain gives me a great excuse not to sign up for a longer distance anytime soon. The training block just wouldn't fit in, especially with the birth of our first child due in early August. Things are getting busy both personally and professionally, and I couldn't be happier!
On to the pictures here in the blog. This is a contact sheet I sent last night to one of my favourite architects to work with when it comes to homes and making them work seamlessly for her clients - Toni Moses. I send contact sheets from a wider set of photos to the people I photograph for so they can have full choice in the editing process. Some people opt for more input, others leave me to it, but often it's somewhere in the middle. I really enjoy the two-way process. The only thing I draw the line at is the removal or inclusion of significant items in the scenes. If that's required, it's time to find a visualisation specialist. I thrive when documenting the real deal and celebrating what architects and designers bring to the world, without too much magic afterwards.
Pic 1: Enjoying the new staircase (Douglas Fir) photo options here, which opened up the hallway space and adds interest with shapes and natural materials. People, cats, and in this case, doggies are always welcome in my shots (see top left)!
Pic 2: This made me think about something. I can't be the only photographer who ends up getting on really well with the client's pets and comes back with a contact sheet full of animal photos too, can I? Better than the opposite scenario, I guess.
Have a great weekend everyone and get in touch if you've got a project to đ¸

I was thrilled when Ze'ev asked me to photograph this project. After seeing the care and dedication that went into its construction, I was eager to help showcase the skills and craftsmanship involved through careful and patient photography. The images would ultimately be used to help with archives, bids for future work and submissions for awards. It was an honour to play my part in helping turn the judges eyes and attention to the project, and I'm thrilled with the deserved success they have achieved so far - already picking up a CFCI award in 2023. I hope this project leads to many more opportunities to work together, creating positive outcomes in the future. Well done to all those involved in the build.

Some thoughts on Industry Awards and Photography
There is no doubt that winning industry awards is a significant milestone for architects and design firms. They not only validate hard work but bring with them numerous benefits, such as increased credibility, exposure, a competitive edge, and even improved employee morale and retention.
As part of winning these awards, the presentation of the project submission is also essential, and high-quality photography plays a critical role in achieving recognition for excellence in the field.
First and foremost, high-quality photography shows the design and aesthetics of the project, highlighting creativity and attention to detail. Judges and clients are drawn to projects that are visually appealing, and through experience in being part of submissions which subsequently won RIBA National Awards and RIBA House of the Year titles, I've seen first-hand that photographs can make all the difference.
If you know me or have worked with me before, you'll probably have heard me banging on about the importance of putting the same energy and commitment to image making during the work-in-progress stage. This isn't just because I'd like to generate a larger invoice, it's that high-quality photography tells the story of the project, showcasing the design process, problems overcome, inspiration, and impact. Judges and clients are also interested in the backstory of the project, where it's come from, why it's changing and photographs do help convey the project's narrative, vision and delivery.
Judges and clients want to see the project close up, highlighting the firm's attention to detail and commitment to excellence and consistency. They often look for projects that demonstrate a high level of craft; quality photography, well planned and thought through, showcase this.
One of the challenges that architects and design firms face is how to present their projects in the best possible light. It can be time-consuming and stressful to try and capture the perfect photograph or set that demonstrates the true design, creativity, and impact of the project. This is where a professional architectural photographer like me can be an important asset.
By working with together, architects and design firms can have the worry of how their projects should be presented from a visual point of view removed.
Moreover, working with Richard Fraser Photography means that architects and design firms can save time and resources. My approach means that I can work carefully and with skill and experience across a range of uses and designs, always delivering high-quality photographs that meet your requirements.

Architecture is obviously about designing buildings, but also about shaping the environment and the society we live in. It influences our mood, behavior, and well-being. The quality of the spaces we inhabit can have a positive or negative impact on our mental and physical health, our productivity and creativity, our social interactions and relationships, and our sense of identity and belonging.
Rowan and Emily discussed how they sought to develop relationship-based planning, study inherent patterns for growth and open systems to allow for more informed spaces in which we live whilst helping us to remain grounded in nature.
I have been lucky enough to photograph many of their projects and these were used throughout the presentation to help explain ideas, concepts and creations effectively. Find out more about them and what they do:

One of the most notable features of the building is its cylindrical shape, which provides residents with uninterrupted views of the city. The exterior of the building is clad in a pattern of angled glass panels that create a unique texture and reflect the changing colors of the sky throughout the day.
The tower's structural system is composed of a reinforced concrete core and steel frame, which provides stability and allows for the building's slender form. The building's height is achieved through a series of setbacks that create terraces and outdoor spaces for residents to enjoy.
Inside, the tower features spacious apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide ample natural light and stunning views of the city. The interiors are finished with high-quality materials and modern fixtures, creating a luxurious living experience for residents.
Whether apartment living is your thing or not, this tower stretches the possibilities of modern architectural design and is a masterpiece of engineering.

Look closely and you'll see that even the tiniest details in nature are interconnected. Take the humble snowdrop; a vital source of nourishment at this time of year for the bees before the pollen and nectar of the Spring flowers hit full bloom. As an architectural photographer, I've come to appreciate the importance of taking on diverse opportunities to sharpen my skills.
But I've also realised that the wider environment plays a crucial role in shaping the buildings we create. It's all connected, and by taking some time to stay back and look at the bigger picture, staying attuned to the world around us, we can become better architects and photographers alike.

I'm absolutely delighted that as part of the submission for the 2022 RIBA awards, Suffolk House, by Haysom Ward Miller have gone and made it to the RIBA House of the Year long list This is the third time in four years. Quite something!
It has been picked up by Channel 4's Grand Designs TV and will feature on tonight's episode headed by the great Kevin MacLeod. It's always such a buzz to be involved in helping architectural practices gain the recognition they deserve through these awards - be it long list, short list or overall winner (and I've been lucky enough to be involved in the photography side of all three outcomes). In this case, RFP completed the photography for archive and submission to the awards, which was subsequently deemed worthy of a visit from RIBA jurors.
It has already picked up a RIBA National Award and Regional Award and should be proud of that alone.
Well done to all of the team at the wonderful Haysom Ward Miller and good luck tonight, alongside the other deserving buildings.

Finally, @charlie_waite must have a mention here too - he has for a long, long time inspired and informed my practice. Studying his image making and the great care and precision which goes into the process struck a chord with me years ago which still chimes today. His meticulous approach and heartfelt passion for what he does informs me each and every time I approach the environment I'm presented with; albeit so often different from the scenes Charlie might choose!
Well done again to all involved this year. I tried to tag the winners in here but could only find some of you!

Architects' Haysom Ward Miller have won a 2022 RIBA National Award with their Stone Cottage in Suffolk. This is HUGE news because out of the thousands of buildings constructed each year, only 29 have won the award this year; even fewer of them residential buildings, so this is really special.
RIBA announced the regional awards a few months back, of which Stone Cottage was a part of the RIBA East announcement. To go on from there and win a RIBA national award amongst all of the other incredible entries up and down the UK is a feat achieved by a deserving practice led by Rowan, Patrick, Liz and Tom. A group who have honed their skills in creating buildings of integrity, honesty, beauty and a knack for enabling them to provide exactly what a space should create: effortless living in an uplifting environment. By effortless I mean that feeling which is achieved when a space feels like it's working with you, not against you. It pushes you on, not pulls back. Their designs are not flashy, not based solely on trends, but in the thought given to how space works, how it has differing parts to play amongst its users in this orchestra of life, how the materials we're surrounded by affect our daily patterns of movement as well as emotion. Haysom Ward Miller get it right, from what I've seen over the years working with them, time and again.

But why am I so delighted?
Well, when I was starting out as a professional photographer back in 2013, Patrick Ward agreed to let me loose on a project he had created in a converted barn in East Anglia. It was from that moment that I felt something ignite between the absolute passion for what I do combined with somebody else putting trust in my work, commitment and passion to demonstrate their project in it's best light whilst staying truthful to what's really there (not all photographers do that last bit!). I plan meticulously for weather, season, time of day and sun path, occasionally to the frustration/bemusement of those who are responsible for granting access to the spaces I photograph!
Over the years we have got to know each other better and I like to think what I photograph for them has improved as a result of extensive dialogue between us all. To this end, Haysom Ward Miller have in the past 4 years now won 3 (THREE!) RIBA National and regional awards, 1 RIAS award and a House of the Year award (RIBA, Grand Designs amongst others). The only year they didn't win one of these awards was because they didn't submit anything that time around. I am lucky enough to be chosen to photograph all of them for their archive, marketing and subsequent award submission purposes.
No, it's not all due to the photography (although I'd like to say it is!), but it does play its part in conveying the story of buildings to judges of all types of awards or those tendering for competition. To that end what I do IS very important in this process and I am just so glad I can be part of this success for such wonderful people. Long may it continue!

Off the train at King's Cross and straight round the back via the Guardian offices to see a sculpture exhibition there I'd wanted to visit. Unfortunately it was closed. That doesn't matter on a day where you have loose plans, as everything becomes exciting and feels much more alive. There's something in spontaneity that wakes me up. Onwards to Redemption coffee in the pretty glorious Coal Drops Yard - almond croissant and a milky latte for me on this sun-filled London morning thanks! How this space has changed from its original use. My mind can't help hearing echoes of history that seem to make noise from every direction. We've walked this place so many times to photograph it since the earliest days of its development and the change has been staggering. These photos were taken along Canal Reach, walking north east. Construction continues at pace - in this case, even on a Sunday. Deadlines 'n' all that.
A walk along the canal via Angel and a pub or two resulted in the day finishing at another favourite spot of ours - The Barbican. It IS my taste but it's not everybody's. However you see it, it cannot be denied that this 1960s estate was a forward thinking, expressive feat of architectural design alongside ambitious town planning. I feel so much comfort here - so many happy memories in and around it - almost like listening to an old song.
So the busperson's holiday drew to a close and homeward bound to Cambridge we travelled. Eyes turn to 2022 and the creations I'm lucky enough to be asked to photograph. I must say I'm extremely excited and am already charging the batteries for my first shoot this week.
May I take this opportunity to wish you, your businesses and whatever designs you might be involved in well. Good luck, and I hope to see my friends - new and old, at some point through the year...

I guess I think about it more than most because of my profession, but buildings and their idiosyncrasies, for me at least, play a part in creating a sense of home. This one is a major part of my ‘home’. Over the years, they kind of become friends. Still standing throughout the phases of life. Steady. The way light is absorbed and reflected, the shapes and silhouettes they create through day into night, the atmosphere they emit, the smells even. And these change through the seasons as the sun path moves and the temperatures do their cyclical thing. You begin to recognise those patterns, whether it’s conscious or subconscious and with that familiarity comes comfort. Do you know buildings which evoke these feelings? Just me?! Some of you might have noticed two other examples with similar features in Leicester and Oxford which still stand today. Seeley Library's siblings – and this is the middle child.
So by full circle I mean that I can remember standing in this place dreaming of how brilliant it would be if someone actually asked me to photograph a building for them one day. And many years later here I am having photographed it. The very building which inspired my daydreams. It’s an honour to document a building with so much personal and historic importance. Thanks to the staff on site for being so accommodating and of course RH Partnership for asking (they had no idea of how special this place is to me!)
Photography really does help architects convey their message!
Really delighted to work with Haysom Ward Miller and the owners of Simple House, Cambridge for the photography which helped them gain a RIBA award, announced today, in the RIBA East's 2021 Award Winners. This house has already won a design & construction award in Cambridge and now has a new accolade to add to the list!
This wonderful project is backing up the National Award they won alongside the the RIBA House of the Year back in 2018. Continued excellence, recognised by RIBA judges. Well done to everyone involved. It's a delightful space and inspirational story for all people looking to build their own space.
I was very kindly given the keys after requesting that I photograph the building at different times of day across a period which is only defined by great light! I waited and waited for the right lighting conditions from dawn to dusk and the final set of photos obviously helped convey what a beautiful building it is to be in/around as well as its interesting story - the plot had originally been destined for a very standard 2 up/2 down design before the change of concept was introduced to planners by the people who bought it.

The result is a series of clean, light spaces which seem to flow into one another. The materials - clean, natural and neural - are consistent throughout the home, from the wooden beamed, high ceiling height to the custom made ply fronts between the kitchen and bedroom. This palette helps nature set the scene, painting vibrant colours throughout with the indoor plants in full bloom. It's a breathtakingly tranquil place to spend time and I'm sure has become a wonderful home.

Video completed for Palace Green Homes at a former MoD site in Ely.
‘The homes at this development are particularly light and airy inside, with good size rooms and generous storage space, so we felt that it was really important not to clutter them but at the same time, we wanted to show how different types of households could live really comfortably in them.
We selected a mix of contemporary and mid-century styles of the furnishings for the show home to give a slightly younger, urban vibe which worked well with the modern neutral palette of paints, carpets, kitchen and bathroom fittings that have been used to refurbish the homes.
We were also mindful that not everyone moving into the development would have, or would want to spend, a large budget on furnishings so we tried to be creative by mixing price friendly, high street furnishings with second hand and antique pieces and bold artwork and accessories to show how you can create a stylish, liveable interior without breaking the bank.’

I wanted to capture it at the start of a new day - the inspired time to kick on and get things going. It always amazes me how on top of things you feel when you've got a job done early in the morning... It's my absolute favourite time - swimming or the gym included. The result was a set of photos with a gym and pool complex which looked ready for the customers. The balance of internal lights glowing against the cool outdoor colours at this time of year helped to portray that sense of warmth and welcome which I was intending to achieve. Also, with photography, the stronger the daylight gets, the more difficult it is to see inside so this time of day was ideal for my aims this time round.
The early morning also helped to negate the need for model releases - the centre is already open to the public and although people in the shots would help with the sense of scale and use, it sometimes complicates the image and takes away from the offering of a brand new space ready for the community, especially if it became very busy. Thanks to all the staff for being so welcoming at such an uncompromising hour!

A virtual tour enables a 'walkaround' of a space for clients or design teams as their project develops or completes. The advantage of this sort of tour is that you don't have to visit the site to get a superb feel for how it looks. This can help teams to work together more collaboratively and pinpoint how to complete subsequent stages of a build with more cohesion. Additionally, keeping a virtual tour when a building or project is finished can drastically improve your offering through marketing - communicating your work in a new, accurate and exciting way. It enables potential future clients to walk through your projects to get an honest, 360 degree feel of a space.
Have a think about how a virtual tour might help you or your business and get in touch if you want to discuss the process further.
Have a look for yourself. This one has been made for King’s Row, Ely by Palace Green Homes.

Marks Barfield Architects and the whole construction and design team involved have done a sensational job at delivering a building which is not only fit for purpose but has improved the local area at the same time. Not something which can be said of all new builds in Cambridge.

Here is a recent example for a client who had completed a refurbishment of a historic building in to 17 separate bedrooms for short stay language students. Their aim was simple: make the accommodation look new, clean and inviting enough to stay and study at.
Tip toeing around the trades as they finish snagging isn't uncommon and that was the case at this location... No evidence of them here though thanks to a well planned shoot and great communication with the client regarding the order in which the shots were going to be taken. I knew this by mapping the sun path at this time of year, talking through the needs of the client and going for a walk around before the day of the shoot to avoid any obvious issues lying in wait... they do get you if you don't out-think them!
Feedback from the client was fantastic:
"I AM IN AWE.
These are utterly beautiful.
It was an absolute pleasure to work with you ... We would definitely like to keep connected with your services moving forward."

I cannot tell you how pleased I have been this past week - we found out that all of the effort photographing Lochside House in the freezing cold Scottish winter has helped its cause. This house has not only won a RIAS and RIBA National Award, but now has been crowned as House of the Year 2018 by the fabulous Kevin McCloud on Channel 4's Grand Designs.
Hats off to architects Haysom Ward Miller, Spey Build, the vision of Michele the owner and all involved. The write ups and TV show say it all but I cannot quite explain the sense of magic this place holds. I've always adored the quality of light in the winter months and this is proof that photography in the colder seasons has its merits, it just neeeds careful planning.

I've been working hard on a photography project over the past year and a half at Addenbrooke's Hospital. With thousands of images taken, I've managed to select a set I'm really proud of. They seek to document the hidden spaces and their stories within a working hospital to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS. The Barbican Complex in London is an example of brutalist architecture made predominantly from concrete. It comprises of three tall residential towers and a central block which contains flats and other spaces of various purposes. The complex here is now grade II listed as a site of architectural interest. There certainly isn't the feel you would expect from such a cold looking building.
It was created after severe bombing during the second world war and was built between 1965 and 1976 by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon architects.
I was so pleased yesterday to find out I've had some of my images published, this time in Amateur Photographer magazine! There are loads and loads of exciting things happening at the moment, especially with my architectural work... Keep an eye out for galleries emerging soon based on this area of my photography.
