A Striking Juxtaposition: The Mirror Pod Extension by Mart Barrass Architect, Shortlisted for the 2025 RIBA East Award
I'm absolutely delighted to announce that a project I recently had the privilege of photographing, the Mirror Pod Extension designed by Mart Barrass Architect, has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 RIBA East Award! This project is a stunning example of how contrasting architectural styles can not only coexist but beautifully complement each other, creating a captivating dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The original house, with its classic thatched roof and warm, inviting façade, embodies the timeless charm of rural English architecture. It speaks of history, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to its surroundings. It's the kind of image that evokes a sense of home and belonging.
And then there's the extension – a bold, contemporary intervention that provides a striking counterpoint to the original dwelling. Clad in reflective panels, the aptly named "Mirror Pod" appears to float, seamlessly merging with the landscape and mirroring the surrounding trees and sky. The sleek, minimalist design of the extension offers a glimpse into the future, while its reflective surface creates a fascinating visual interplay with the traditional form of the existing house.
What truly sets this project apart is the thoughtful way in which the extension integrates with the original structure. It's not simply a modern addition tacked onto an old house. Instead, Mart Barrass Architect has masterfully created a sense of harmony and balance. The Mirror Pod's reflective surface amplifies the beauty of the thatched cottage and its setting, while the traditional form of the house provides a grounding element to the futuristic design.
While my focus as a photographer for this particular announcement was primarily on capturing the exterior form and the interplay of old and new, I know that the interior spaces are equally compelling. They are designed to maximize natural light and create a seamless connection between inside and out. The extension offers a flexible, modern living space that complements the more traditional rooms of the original house.
But it's more than just a beautiful space – it's a home. Speaking with the family who live here, it's clear that they truly love the space that has been created. The extension has become an integral part of their lives, a place where they can relax, connect, and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.
This project is a testament to the power of innovative design, showcasing how seemingly disparate architectural styles can not only coexist but enhance one another. It's a celebration of both tradition and modernity, a reflection of the past and a bold step into the future. I'm incredibly proud to have played a part in capturing the essence of this remarkable project through my photography.
Huge congratulations to Mart Barrass Architect and the entire team involved in bringing this vision to life! This well-deserved shortlisting from the RIBA is a testament to their creativity, vision, and dedication. I eagerly await the announcement of the winners and wish them the very best of luck!
