The recent announcement of the 2026 RIBA South East Awards shortlist is fantastic news. I'm thrilled to share that the refurbishment of the Saltdean Lido by RH Partnership Architects has been selected as one of the 14 finalists.
As noted in the architectural press, the 2026 shortlist features an incredibly diverse collection of schemes. RIBA South East jury chair Craig Sheach highlighted how the selected projects deepen our understanding of bringing existing structures back to life. Having spent time on-site documenting the revival of this Grade II listed Art Deco pool and associated community space, I can confidently say that RHP’s work embodies exactly that principle.
Photographing this excellent community project was a deeply rewarding exercise. The coastal light is notoriously dynamic, requiring a rigorous approach to on-site logistics to ensure the building’s sweeping white curves and crisp details were captured at their absolute peak. Waiting for the precise moment when the afternoon sun articulated the depth of the restored rotunda was well worth the effort. The architecture itself is fantastic; balancing historical preservation with modern utility, but it is the people at the pool who truly activate the space, turning a historic set piece into a vibrant, living asset.
Documenting projects of this caliber is exactly what drives me and my practice. Having previously photographed a project which ended up winning the RIBA House of the Year in 2018, I know firsthand the level of exceptional design quality required to secure a place on these prestigious shortlists.
I am so glad the Lido is getting the recognition it deserves. It was a privilege to collaborate with RH Partnership to capture the essence of their sensitive, intelligent restoration and I look forward to the jury's final decisions later this spring. Good luck to all involved!
